The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant is a public institution under Romanian Ministry of Culture (located in Bucharest capital city), part of the European family of Folk Art/ Anthropology and Ethnology Museums. It possesses a collection of masked objects collected from the country, which are subject to conservation procedures, as well as having a sum of archive funds on the subject (video and photography). On the other hand, the Ethnology Department is active in ethnological and anthropological field research of masked rituals and their present dynamics, disseminating its knowledge and research results through participation in conferences, articles, organising exhibitions and other museum educational and scientific activities.
Furthermore, the Museum is presently engaged as a partner in an ERASMUS+ project entitled “Unveiling the Arts and Works behind masks”, alongside other 11 organisations from 4 countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal and Romania). The Museum has also planned a trilogy of exhibitions called Liminal (2025-2027) with fieldwork material and in 2026, a volume of Martor, the Annual Anthropology Magazine of the Museum will issue, on the topic of masks (in shifting ritual and performative contexts).
