Mr. Suraj Shakya, representative of the Kathmandu branch of the ILRC (IMACO Local Research Center) under the International Mask Arts & Culture Organization (IMACO), is a museologist and artist who is also a member of the Federation of Handicraft Association Nepal (FHAN). He has been officially authorized to serve as the liaison between FHAN and IMACO.
He has a deep passion for Newar art and culture, and his ultimate goal is to preserve this traditional heritage through his mask art, “Khwaa-Paa.” As part of this mission, he held his first solo exhibition titled “Khwaa-Paa” in 2018.
As a museologist, he searches for the faces of gods, goddesses, and spiritual symbols in metal sheets and brings them to life using the traditional repoussé and filigree techniques. Through this artistic expression, he creatively preserves the traditional mask culture of Nepal.
All of his masks are rooted in Nepal’s traditional masked dance culture. These include the Asta-Matrika dance of Patan, the Indra Jatra festival of Kathmandu, Mahakali Naach, and Kartik Naach—all of which are renowned traditional mask dance festivals of Nepal.
In addition to his artistic work, he is actively engaged in all areas of museum practice, including documentation, conservation, research, education, and exhibition. Notably, he contributed to the founding of the Itumbahal Museum in Kathmandu, one of Nepal’s first monastic museums. More recently, he has been involved in the documentation and conservation project of the famous Buddhist temple “Hiranya Varna Maha Bihar” (also known as the Golden Temple) located in Patan.
