On June 19, Andong Sustainable University hosted a special lecture titled “Andong’s Mask Culture: At the Center of the World.” The lecture was delivered by Mr. WooHyuk Choi, Secretary General of the International Mask Arts & Culture Organization (IMACO), and provided valuable insights into the globalization potential of local traditional culture and the role of mask culture in promoting sustainable cultural development.

Mr. Choi emphasized the rich tradition of mask culture in the Andong region and the importance of international exchange based on this heritage, stating, “Andong’s mask culture is not merely a form of folk art, but a valuable cultural asset capable of connecting with the world.”
He also introduced various international events and exchange activities organized by IMACO, as well as the World Mask Archive project. Additionally, he presented ongoing initiatives aimed at positioning Andong as a central hub for international cultural exchange and a true “Mecca of Mask Culture.”

This special lecture offered Andong citizens and university participants a new perspective on the identity and global significance of local culture. It was a meaningful occasion to witness how regional cultural assets are expanding onto the international stage.

A representative from Andong Sustainable University remarked, “We will continue to organize a variety of lectures and programs to foster the capacity to preserve our valuable cultural heritage and engage in dialogue with the world.”
